The Fulwood Pull-On Shift Dress (Paper) Sewing Pattern | MiY Collection

Skill Level:

  • Description

You're going to love this dress. It's so versatile, and can be made in lots of different versions and fabrics. It is basically a loose-fitting, pull-on shift dress with no fastenings, making it a brilliant first dressmaking project. There are 2 different finishes for the neck - a roll-over collar, and a simple bound boat neck, optional side-seam pockets, and optional tie belt. You can customise it further by making it with the optional pleats, or just using the bodice to make a simple boxy top. It's cool worn on its own for summer, and makes a great layering piece worn with long-sleeved t-shirts and leggings for winter.

The pattern is multi-sized and printed on 80gsm white paper (not flimsy tracing paper) that is packaged in a white paper bag with an A4 book of instructions (example in last photo).

The dress is a fairly loose-fitting, generously sized garment so 3 sizes are included in the pattern, ranging from bust size 80cm to 101cm (31.5" to 40") and hip size 88cm to 109cm (34.5" to 43"). This pattern is sized based on body measurements, not dress sizes, and includes full details of finished garment measurements for each size to make sure you get the right size first time.

This pattern is suitable for almost any fabric, woven or knitted. It makes a more structured dress with a heavier fabric such as denim, or a summery more drapey version in single jersey or lightweight woven linen. You can even mix fabrics and make the bodice and skirt from different fabrics.

This design is easy and will suit beginners that have just started to sew!

The pattern comes with a thorough instruction booklet which covers:

* fabric requirements
* finished garment measurements
* cutting layouts
* an explanation of fabric layouts and cutting
* if you choose a stretch knit fabric - how to sew knit fabrics on a domestic sewing machine
* instructions & diagrams for how to make all the different variations.

The patterns are designed and written by Wendy Ward, an experienced designer and qualified teacher, and they have been thoroughly road-tested by her eager sewing students. Rest assured that you will find MIY Collection patterns well explained in down-to-earth and accessible language with clear, detailed diagrams. Wendy has been writing instructions for people just like you since 2007.
